What is a Boxer Rottweiler Mix

The Boxer Rottweiler Mix: The simplest way to look at it is to call them a cross between the Boxer and Rottweiler dog breeds.

While that’s just a simple definition, it does quite a good job describing what they are. Well, except for giving us an idea of their size and what to expect when we encounter one, of course.

They’re medium to large-sized dogs and can be quite a handful for beginner dog owners because of their sturdy appearance.

However, this doesn’t take anything away from their lovable, affectionate, and loyal nature. They’re intelligent and very obedient when appropriately trained.

They’re often called Boxweilers as a casual name; they’ve got combined traits from both parents to make them perfect watch and guard dogs. Although, they’re still as capable of serving as a family companion.

Overview — History of the Boxer Dog

Boxers have an ancestral history that dates back 2500 BC during the Assyrian empire. However, the modern-day Boxers we know were first bred in Germany around the late 1800s.

It is believed that they are descendants and were bred from a larger German dog breed, the Bullenbeissers, German for “Bull Biter.”

Bullenbeissers were used by German royalty to hunt down animals as huge as bears, bison, and boar in ducal estates.

However, when the country’s political situation changed, the estates were split up, and the popularity of the Bullenbeissers slowly died.

Eventually, they will come back again, this time being crossed with a smaller mastiff breed by German breeders, birthing what we know today as the Boxer

Boxer’s name relates to how the breed fights, using a paws-first approach.

Boxers were first registered in AKC in 1904, although they were already in existence as early as 1800.

Their popularity in America increased when a Boxer dog named Bang Away won the U.S. heyday in 1950.

Overview — History of the Rottweiler Dog

The Rottweiler dog breed as we know it today were descendants of Roman war and herding dogs known as drover dogs.

Roman warriors used this dog to guard their herd as they traveled across Europe. The Roman army grew exponentially, and they needed more durable dogs to guard their herds.

Roman breeders began experimenting with Asian Mastiffs; then, the Rottweiler was born.

These new breeds of Rottweiler were perfect, to the extent German breeders also used them as foundation stock for some of their dog breeds.

After the Roman Empire collapsed, most of the dogs were used by butchers in the cattle town of Rottweil.

They protected herds as they moved from the grazing field to the market. Their incredible success in this task earned their name “Rottweiler Metzgerhund,” which means “Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil” in English.

Nowadays, they’re given more diversified tasks, working as personal protectors, police dogs, etc.

They’re among the first support dogs for the blind and can handle search and rescue missions, as seen in the World Trade Centre disaster.

According to AKC, today’s Rottweiler dogs are German, although the Romans originally bred them.

Their German origin is attributed to the fact that it was the Germans who first outlined how a standard breed of the dog should look like.

Now enough with discussing their parents, let’s look at the Boxweilers.

The Appearance Of A Boxer Rottweiler Mix

Suppose there’s anything to get from designer dogs. In that case, it’s the fact that they’re always unpredictable when it comes to knowing their exact appearance.

The best bet most times is to talk to the breeder and know the exact hybrid you’re looking at.

However, with Boxweilers, this isn’t always the case. You can almost know what you’re looking for to be consistent with the puppies.

They often take the Rottweiler traits in appearance; the puppies usually have the same head and muzzle as Rotties.

Their body build often depends on the dominant gene from both parents. You’re likely to see Boxweiler puppies be muscular when they take the Rottweiler parent appearance traits.

Also, one common thing that you will always see in Boxweilers is the floppy ears they inherit from both parents. This you can always guarantee. However, some fluctuations in other appearance traits are not present in both parents.

Coat And Colour Of A Boxer Rottweiler Mix.

Well, this is one area without many guesses too. Both parents are double-layer coated, so you’d expect their mixes to be as well.

The fur is usually short and thick, resulting in a rough texture. We get that variety we love about designer dogs again regarding color.

They can have their coat colored black, brown, brindle white, or fawn. It’s normal to see some having double and multi-colored coats as well.

Size Of A Boxer Rottweiler Mix

At first sight of Boxweiler puppies, you wouldn’t even imagine how huge they could get when fully grown.

The only reason not to be surprised is that both parents are large-sized dogs.

A Boxer Rottweiler Mix can measure 20 to 28 inches from the shoulders. You’d ideally expect anything from 80 to 120 pounds when it comes to weight.

They’re going to grow up to be huge dogs, so considering the space you have at home for them is very important for them to thrive.

The Temperament Of A Rottweiler Boxer Mix

A Boxer and Rottweiler Mix is the type you want to live with the family. They’re affectionate, loyal, and brilliant.

They may have parents who were initially working dogs, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t tap from the companionship side as well.

They can also serve as excellent guard dogs because of their protective nature.

They thrive around prominent families with a large compound or backyard. They’re pretty playful and usually require a lot of attention to keep their energy levels down, and that’s best done with some kids with the same energy levels around the house.

Except for injuries resulting from their sheer size, there’s not much to worry about when it comes to playing with kids.

They can be way bigger than your little kids, so you have to watch them when playing; if you have a bigger child, it’s even better.

Boxweilers are usually calm and not easily provoked when taught how to socialize with people from a young age.

Health Problems Of A Boxweiler

Now here comes the part we usually don’t like to hear. Although it’s crucial to know the health problems associated with a particular dog breed, most owners shy away from the knowledge because they never want to imagine their pet getting sick.

But it’s still important we talk about it for the sake of the dog at least. Luckily, hybrid dogs like the Boxweilers are usually powerful and healthier than their parents.

You don’t need to work yourself over the health issues provided you healthily care for your dog from the outset.

However, as typical with large dogs, they have an average lifespan of 8 to 12 years.

They might be predisposed to some illnesses, but with proper health clearance on the parent breeds by the breeder and vaccination of puppies, health issues shouldn’t be much of a problem.

Some of the illnesses Boxweilers are predisposed to are;

  • Cataracts
  • Dental issues
  • Ear Infections
  • Joint dysplasia
  • Degenerative Myelopathy
  • Cancer

Grooming Requirements for a Boxer Rottweiler Mix

Now here comes the part in caring for a dog; most dog owners try to run away even though they know that their dog needs it.

Besides, if your dog is well-groomed, they become the attraction of public eyes, and it’s hard to see who wouldn’t want that.

Luckily, Boxweilers are generally moderate maintenance dogs. They’re intelligent enough to do some part of the grooming themselves, so you don’t have to worry about investing too much time in grooming the dog.

This dog breed has short fur, and they shed moderately. Brushing should be done no more than twice a week and maybe up to four times during shedding season.

Brushing there helps keep it in good condition, so always make sure you get it done.

When it comes to bathing, you want to be bathing them at least once a month. If you discover your dog takes the drooling trait from the Rottweiler parent, then you may have to bathe him often, maybe twice or thrice a month.

Mind you, always use dog shampoo; regular shampoo can give your dog dry skin.

Lastly, you want to clean their ears and brush their teeth regularly to prevent health issues.

The nails will usually take care of themselves if your dog does a lot of exercises, but if he doesn’t, nail clipping is welcome too.

Dietary Requirements for a Boxer Rottweiler Mix

Nutritional requirements for dogs are breed-specific; that’s why you need to be careful of what you give your dog to eat.

This is a large breed dog, and as such, they require high-quality feeds to meet their nutritional requirements.

The best way to go about it is by contacting your veterinarian or breeder for the type of dog food compatible with the dog.

Ideally, you want to feed them no more than thrice daily; sometimes twice is more than enough. This will reduce the chances of your dog becoming obese.

The breed is already predisposed to joint dysplasia. The worst thing you can do is overfeed him and become overweight.

Also, you want to be supporting their dog food with supplements like salmon oil and probiotics. It’ll help take care of any nutritional needs the dog feed didn’t cover.

Exercise Requirements For A Rottweiler and Boxer Mix

This dog comes from two parents who are work dogs, so don’t expect less when it comes to their energy levels.

They require a lot of physical exercises to keep their energy levels down and mental exercises to stimulate their brain.

They generally do not do well in an apartment building; it is preferable to live in a compound or a house with a large backyard.

They need a lot of space to run and play on their own, especially when you’re too busy to attend to the dog at that moment.

You want to be taking your dog for long walks at least once a day; that’s if you’re not the type that goes the extra mile to have exercise routines with your dog every morning.

This breed can easily get overweight, so exercise plays a vital role in maintaining his body weight.

Mental exercises as well are very encouraged. This is an intelligent dog breed, and mental stimulation is just as important for thriving.

You can engage them with interactive dog toys or, even better, food puzzles.

Training Requirements for a Boxer Rottweiler Mix

The Boxweiler is an intelligent dog breed; as such, they’re very easy to train. Although, it is always advised that training starts from puppyhood to enable them to have much time and learn better.

Despite being easy to train, they require a level of consistency of their training drill from the trainer before they properly get it.

When training your dog, you want to make sure he recognizes you as the pack’s alpha. More importantly, it would be best if you started when he’s still a little puppy.

The parent breeds can be stubborn, so it’s reasonable to expect the same from their pups too.

Socialization is an essential part of your dog’s training too. He needs to get used to being around other people and pets early, so he doesn’t get jumpy every time in public. An excellent way to start is by taking him to the park.

Determining If A Rottweiler Boxer Mix Is The Dog For You

The Boxweiler is generally a dog medium to a large dog breed; both parents have this trait in size, too, so nothing less is expected from their puppies.

It’ll be a lie if I day this dog is the perfect breed for everyone. In fact, no one dog is perfect for all types of homes.

They thrive in a spacious environment; an ideal living condition should be a home with enough space to run and play.

They’re not the type of dog for apartment living. Mind you, living in a spacious home doesn’t necessarily mean leaving them outside the house all the time; it just means he should have his own tiny park to play in whenever they want.

Aside from needing a lot of attention regarding exercise, you also want to invest some time in making sure they’re always eating the right thing at the right time.

As said earlier, they’re prone to joint dysplasia, and that’s primarily caused by obesity, something you don’t want your dog to have.

They also need an owner that cares enough to monitor their mental health and growth. It’s never a pretty scene when a huge dog like this gets out of control, so you must give them the best training your abilities can give.

How Much Does Boxer Rottweiler Mix Puppies Cost?

A Rottweiler Boxer mix puppy (Boxweiler) can cost between $300 to $800.

However, some factors can influence the price of the Boxer Rottweiler Mix Puppies, like the quality of the puppies, residential location, the breeder, the puppy’s parents, and their availability.

Final Takeaway- Rottweiler And Boxer Mix

This dog breed is gradually becoming the go-to dog for companionship and protection. Yeah, I know much of the praises in this article resonated towards their affectionate nature; they are fantastic watchdogs too.

The only issue an owner might have is the amount of fitness exercise this dog demands physical and mental wellbeing.

If you’re a first-time owner, they’re probably not the best choice for you to try out right away. Although this is the case, they still make great pets for big families.
